What has improved about your writing since the beginning of the semester?

My writing is starting to improve now that I have been working with you on a weekly basis. I know what I need to start changing and developing my skills in. I know I need to stay away from SUMMARIZING! I have definitely seen a increase on my skills and hopefully they will continue that direction.

Which paper was the easiest for you to complete?
The last paper has been the easiest paper for me to complete I have actually understood the areas where I am summarizing and tried fixing them. It helped a lot to be able to see one of your papers and realize what they should actually look like.

Most beneficial lesson?
I enjoyed the grammar guides ... I tend to struggle with grammar thank god for spell check!!

Do I feel more prepared?
yes I do feel more prepared but I know that I will constantly have to work at my papers to make them more academic and not summarized in anyway. It will be hard for me with my daughter as she grows up and wants to do more than she does now ... school is going to get harder each year. I really appreciated that fact that you were able to work with me and understand the issues I was going through that really makes you a great teacher!

Your class was a lot of fun even though it was stressful to me for a while you still made the class interesting everyday. I was never sure what was going to happen or be discussed. It was great to get to know you in and out of class hope you have a great summer and future.

Poetry Packet

The poetry pack was very interesting to me . . .When these are put together in this grouping it really makes one realize the sexism going on in today's society. People just assume they know what the opposite sex is thinking and when they want something typically a man they think it is okay to just do what they please and go and get it. I am going to really talk about the poems  "Sexism" and the children's rhyme.
"Sexism" by David Lehman
the first stanza talks about the happiest moment in a woman's life and how a woman is loving and excited to have her man home with her even though he is late because she is already in bed. He also has been drinking and she has no idea where he has been but she doesn't want to cause any fights at the moment. She just wants to feel him next to her in bed . . . which means he is now home.

The second stanza talks about a man and his happiest moment which is having sex with a woman and leaving her to head off home. In my mind this mean that they are really not happy with their life at this present time. When they find the real person they truely love they will have a life changing event which causes their best moment to change. Hopefully.

Children's Rhyme
Is talking about how boys and girls are different. It describes the different thing of girls and boys. The old saying's of boys are from mars and girls are from venus. Boys and Girls are so different in everything they do and just like the rhyme stating all of the different things they are.

The Flea

In the First Stanza
- They are referring to the flea as conception of a fetus
- The sin and shame - happened out of wedlock (before they are engaged)
- loss of maidenhead - lost her virginity - this was a big deal, to lose before married
-pampered swells - the growth of her body  . . .stomach, hips, etc.

In the Second Stanza
- This flea or baby connects the mother and father in a way much stronger and deeper connection than that of a marriage contract.
- mariage bed and mariage temple - is talking about the bed in their house a place where they will be together
- Their parents are extremely disappointed in the act and the outcome (flea)
-cloisterd in these living walls of jet - they are stuck together in this new convent they have made even though those closest to them are completely unhappy with the entire situation.
- the situation with the baby is making the woman crabby and extremely hard to live with that the man wants to kill her
- baby is also hurting the mother but to kill it would end up killing all three - if not in reality break their hearts

3rd Stanza
- cruel and sudden hast thou since - the pregnancy is not going well mother is in a lot of pain
- purpled thy nail - mother is in a lot of pain and stress ( griping hard causing fingers to go purple)
- she doesn't want to blame the flea because even though it is the guilty on she loves it so much already because she has bore all of this pain thus far.
- except in that drop which it sucked from thee - flea is sucking the life from the mother
now the woman is in so much pain that the baby must go.
tis tue then learn how false fears be - when parents learn that they are going to lose something so close to them something that they love before it even is born means the world to them. So much that all of the other fears are nothing at all . . .nothing that compares to this
So much honor, when thou yield'st to me - parents where so proud of their soon to be little one coming into the world
will waste, as this fea's death took life from thee - the death of the flea killed the parents maybe not physically but emotionally and mentally that they feel totally lost and abandoned that they feel like giving up or life is no longer important to them.
Its funny how something so little can change the life in an instant and it can be looked at as a curse or a blessing but when it is taken away with no time to get to know it can make one feel like the world has ended! 

Poetry

I have never really liked to have to read poetry in highschool but that is because it was usually boring and hard to follow. After reading Chapter 18 I believe that I was not reading poetry in the right way at all. I was not asking questions and wondering why the poet did the things he/she did. I knew poets used a lot of metaphors but I must have had a horrible teacher because she never made sense of anything and she would only allow the poems to have one meaning the way she saw it. This made class very frustrating and confusing because poems impact me differently than others due to the experiences I have went through.

I am kind of excited for this next unit it will definetly be different than some of the stories we have been reading.

Dr. Faustus - paper???

Proposal: Does the desire for more knowledge kill? 

Research Question:

Why does Faustus desire to always known more and how does this affect his life?

Thesis Statement
Faustus's desire to become divine in knowledge take over his entire way of life until he ceases to exist.

I would talk about how Faustus was never really satisfied with anything he has done thus far in his life therefor he wants to go to into magic. He wants to be the most knowledgeable person around like a god. I know this is summarizing so I would talk about his options and why he went to the devil instead of praying to God for answers.
I haven't figured out exactly how I am going to write my paper I was just wondering if this is along the line of where I need to be!!!!

Dr. Faustus Scene

Monday's Discussion was very helpful to me. I was a little nervous being the woopie but the class particpated well. I am thinking of writing my paper over the fact of Faustus conscious is starting to question his decision on giving his soul to the devil. He is always asking question about heaven and its location. He seemed to me like he wanted to be just like God so I am wondering if something happened in his lifetime that is making him want to be so divine.

After reading this book I as a very Catholic person I read with that on my mind . . . I just can't imagine anyone ever wanting to sell their soul to the Devil. Their lives could never be that bad before hand to want to live a life of pain and suffering. I have always been taught that God will forgive anyone who is truely sorry for their sins and I still believe that even Lucifer if he ever was truely sorry God would forgive him of his sins and take him back.

I am really interested to finish the story and find out what happens to Faustus!!!

Dr. Faustus Scene V

In Scene V, Faustus starts to think about God and how he did at one time love him but now all he wants is the wealth and honor which the evil angel convinced him would be better. It is funny how someone can change their entire lifestyle because they are envious of what others around them have. They start to do everything possible in achieving their power and wealth. After Faustus gives his soul to the devil he wants to know where hell is, why? I do not understand why he would want to know where it is considering he is going to be going there once his contract has ended with the Devil. I think Faustus is starting to enjoy his new powers and authority to much he says that he will be as great as Lucifer and now he wants a wife because no one can live with out a great wife. When Meph does not bring him what he wants I believe he starts to realize that just because he has dark magic it may not give him the luxurious items he wanted before.

Faustus is just constantly wanting more for his life and he isn't completely satisfied with the things Meph is bringing him. I feel is this foreshadowing the events to come. 

Dr. Faustus Scene I

At the end of Scene I I feel that Faustus is growing stronger and stronger toward the idea of becoming a divine person. He says "he will be resolute" (7) meaning he will be above everyone around him they will have to look up towards him. Faustus believes that once he becomes skilled in magic he will want nothing more. I do not believe this for he has been so undeceive in the past that there will be something new come along. He focuses completely on learning magic and since he is skilled in all areas he does not have to learn those other areas first. "This night I'll conjure though I die therefore" (8). I am wondering if he believes that he is so amazing of a person that he will be able to learn some magic right away or he will die trying. I also wonder if this isn't a sign of what is going to come; I think he is going to give his soul to the devil in return for the gift of magic now I don't know if the devil would trick him or what for sure will be happening. The cover of my book has the fire on it in my eyes that represents hell this is another reason I think he is going to work with the devil for his power he wants so bad.

I was not sure if we were suposed to post or not so I am going to just so I DON'T get kicked out!! I am not sure what to post?? I am doing fine . . just kidding

After reading the pages on drama I am excited I love going to plays and being in One-Act in high school. I need to work on reading the scripts and really concintrating on why and how the author wrote that piece a certain way. I also need to remember there are many differnt understanding to each piece and it is all how the reader sees it.

I chose to right about the story the Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie LePrince Beaumont. I want to prove that reasoning is developed within everyone and it is up to the person on how they use their skills. I talked about how God gives a conscious to humans because he wanted them to be able to make choices instead being bestial.
I am struggling making it flow or if this is the story I really want to right about!

I have really enjoyed your class so far besides the fact that you kick us out if we forget something most of us are not there to screw you over and sometimes are life is so overwhelming that we forget minor things . . .we are human. I really liked the grammar guides because of the vocabulary words they are coming in handy when I am righting other papers to make me sound at a higher academic level. I also like the group discussions we do on the stories, this really helps me see things that others did and why they felt that way.

Beauty and the Beast

This article was very interesting it was completely different from the movie.

Setting

1.      1.Beast’s Castle

             – located deep within the forest

2.      2.Beauty’s Bedroom (Apartment)

-          Where Beast tried to convince Beauty to marry him, he did this every night at nine o’clock.

                        -      Foreshadowing – The Beast’s secret of the cure for the curse that is on him.

3. Merchants house

                        - Beauty’s father

                        - Located in country near Beast’s castle

                        - Learn all about Beauty and her much she loves and devotes her life to her father.

Point of View

-          3^rd person omniscient

·         The author is telling the thought of many characters throughout the story

Cuba

After reading the story We came all the Way from Cuba So You Could Dress Like This? by Archy Obejas was a very interesting story but I didn't like how the author jumped around from present, past, and future she is very hard to follow but otherwise it was an eye opener. She makes sure the reader understands how life was for her the doubts the questions the idea of what if she would have stayed in Cuba would her life be different. She wanted to go back to Cuba but her father forbid her to even think about that because they brought her over the America for her to have a better future for herself.
When her father dies she realizes there are things she never told him but she seems okay with him being gone because I believe now she feels like she can live her own life not one constantly being overlooked by her father. She is allowed to experience the life in Cuba if she chooses or just to live life with out the pressure of her father's perfect dream.

Racism

I enjoyed our discussion today I think racism is such an issue in the world today but like you said we live in such a sheltered area that we do not recognize what is going on world wide. I try not to be judging or stereotypical but it sometimes happens now after today I realize how much it is going on around me.

People are different all around us even within our own race. I wish people could get past the skin color to really get to know people and to give them that chance at an equal opportunity. I know a lot of people of different color than myself and all I see is people/ friends. I know that we as White Americans ruined the lives of many different races that we took away everything they knew and loved and made them become something completely different and we didn't care about their feelings or opinions on the matter.

I think class today was very good and something we should do again because everyone needs to know the importance of treating every person with respect no matter the color or the past of that color they as a person are created equally by God and deserve to be treated like a person not a slave or an inferior being.

Fake Twitter Accounts

Fake Twitter Accounts are causing a great deal of problems, because they are able to go in an impersonate someone of higher authority. "I love that we have no idea who is behind them, and that's part of the fun" people today have no respect for others they love to make drama happen just to see what will make of the situation. I have had friends before who would like to get on each others facebook when that certain person wouldn't be around just so they could make up something to allow drama and rumors to spread. If we as a society do nothing with the continuing spread of technology then who knows what will be happening in the future. I am not saying that technology is bad by any means I just believe that technology needs to be watched and better protected so others can not just destroy one person's life.
I also think that when people are making twitter accounts for Chuck Norris  and Sara Palin they need to be treated as vandalizing because they are taking their lives and destroying them. With these accounts people are hiding behind their text and not confronting people with their problems and I believe that is a great problem with our society today.

The Metamorphesis

After I have reread The Metamorphesis from what we discussed in class it started to make more sense to me but I really didn't enjoy reading a book where a man turns into a bug. I though it was a very depressing story where this man was a very hard working person who really cared about his family and when he got changed into a bug they pretty much deserted him. He was trapped in his very small room with nothing to exciting ever happening and eventually he felt like such a pain to his family that he gave up on life and died.

I think that happens a lot in the world today when people just stop having the drive to live when they feel no one else cares or understands them. They like Gregor just quite eating and eventually let go and die.

The Benefactor

I have decided to do my paper on The Benefactor; because he was the supreme ruler of the One State. He showed great control over the ciphers by dehumanizing them, putting them on strict rules, and by giving them no privacy.

I was going to let you know ... you think its been cold so far; yesterday I went to a polar bear dip and jumped into the river at 28 degrees both the air and water. It was COLD but fun!!!

The end of the book!

The ending completely caught me off guard. I was expecting D-503 to be free out in the wild with O and their baby. I didn't think he would have ended up with I-330 towards the end. I think he was starting to realize how controlling she was becoming and how she was only around him when she needed him for something. Unlike O who loved D-503 for himself and never tried to use him for anything except when she decided he didn't want to be with her anymore she wanted the next best thing . . . his baby.

I wondered what happened to O?
What happened when he got the operation ... did he become almost completely like a robot because his head was lighter??
The ending was very confusing to me!!!! But overall I really enjoyed this book!!!

What I would hate the most about ONE STATE

The one thing I would hate about living in the one state is being with out a family. I know now that I have a family I would do anything in my power to keep it that way. I am sure that the guardians and the benefactor new if the people would be able to have strong relationships with their families that they might be able to start developing strong ties with others who have the same beliefs and ideas they do. I know I would be lost without my little girl or my husband in my life. The one state definitely does a great job of dehumanizing people with out the feeling of being loved in life everything about you would be depressing. I think it is strange how no one knows anything about who they belong with, kids, family members all they know is they can go down and get a pink ticket from someone and have sex with them ... what if they were having sex with their brother or sister!!!! (that's gross)

Strategy

After reading the textbook I have decided to write about the biographical strategy. I believe it is nice to know a little bit of information about the author of the piece. I think it gives the reader kind of an eye opener to what the story could be about or if the story is hard to understand than maybe something about the author could explain it. In the book WE I think it is nice for people to have a little understanding of what the author's life was about to really be able to see what the characters are going to be reliving in this story.

The Elements of Fiction ~ * ~ WE

1. Style - Set up very mathematical;where everything must be perfect and is always described in mathematical terms. This is done to really be able to understand D-503's world.
2. Tone - starts out perfectly mathematical then changing into something less organized; D-503 starts breaking the system.
3. Irony - D-503 always refers to himself being sick instead he is really in love with I-330 and she is changing his life into something he doesn't want at first but then decides he does.
4. Plot - is going in chronological order in the events of D-503's life.
5. Characterization - the author does a great job with making the characters seem real like D-503 tell us everything about himself while he is recording for the Intergral. The author also does a great job of making one feel like they are really getting to know each character because of the great amount of description they have.
6. Setting - is located in One State with the Benefactor as the almighty one.
7. Point of View - D-503 is the only one telling the story - first person narrator.
8. Symbol - Triangle which is represented of the connection between D-503, R-13, and O.
9. Theme - show people what life was like under a communist society here the benefactor is the ruler and all others are nothing to him they must do as they are told when they are told or they will cease to exist. The theme starts to change when D-503 starts to realize what freedom is like and starts to enjoy having it.

Introduction

Hello my name is Jami Dailey,I am 22 years old and i am currently a junior at USD. I received my associates degree in Elementary Education at Northeast Community College in Norfolk,Nebraska. My husband is a lineman we have been married for almost two years and we have a four month old little girl.
I enjoy working with children thus the reason I am going into elementary education some other things I enjoy is hunting,fishing, and basically anything that deals with being outside. I also have five horses that i enjoy riding when its nice out! When I was in high school I competed in the national high school rodeo association in barrel racing, pole bending, and cutting. I made it to state all three years that I competed my senior year I went to Nationals. Other things I enjoy is spending time with my family and friends or just relaxing in my house with a good book or movie!!
